Create a Community Project

caGrid Community Projects, endorsed by the caGrid Knowledge Center, enables developers to contribute components and extensions to the caGrid community. The effort provides community members with a software repository, software compilation and testing system, forums, mentorship, best practices and community awareness that together facilitate community development and adoption.

Each project may have its own infrastructure (e.g., repository, wiki or mailing list for user support), or utilize any of the available infrastructure hosted by the Knowledge Center. It is likely that some projects will use all available components while others may only require support to publicize their project. Both approaches are welcome.

Community projects are expected to support the goals of caGrid:

  • To enable universal mechanisms for providing interoperable programmatic access to data and analytical resources.
  • To create a self-describing infrastructure; the structure and semantics of data can be programmatically determined.
  • To provide for programmatic discovery and use of available resources.

Benefits of Creating a Community Project

Why create a Community Project? For the project development team there are several benefits that will make your involvement worthwhile:

  • Access to an established project infrastructure that provides build and test support and WIKI space for your documentation.
  • Forums to enable community interaction.
  • Monthly caGrid User Group calls.
  • A more formal relationship to receive caGrid technical information.
  • Assistance identifying new users within the larger caGrid community with the goal of increasing the use of your project software.
  • Regular information about new caGrid features as they are developed.
  • Incorporation of your project use cases and priorities into the caGrid development priorities and time line.

How to Create a caGrid Community Project

The caGrid Knowledge Center has created a process to assist in the creation and support a community project. This process requires the collaboration of the Knowledge Center and the development team that would like their project to be included as a Community Project.

Development Teams interested in learning about or initiating the process should read the caGrid Community Project Process page and the documents provided.
