Creating Spaces

Contents
See all of the spaces on caGrid.org: http://cagrid.org/dashboard.action

Step 1: Create the Space

1. To create a space, select Edit->New->Space... from any page.

2. The next screen will ask you to set the name, spacekey, and permissions for the space. When setting the spacekey, please be concise. You can change the permissions for a space later if needed. This is helpful if you want only yourself to be able to view the space while it is being worked on. Once the space is finalized, the permissions can be changed so that the space is able to be viewed by other users.

3. To use the layout set by caGrid.org and in accordance with out notation standards, we ask that you select Adaptavist Theme Builder for your theme.

Step 2: Choose a layout

1. Once a space has been created, you will need to choose the layout. From the Home page of your space, select Edit->Administration->Choose Layout.

2. In the left window, select the CAGRIDPROJECTWITHNAV layout. Then Save the space.

Your choice of layout will depend on what type of space you are creating. CAGRIDPROJECTWITHNAV is the most common layout used.

Step 3: Create the Navigation Page

Once you have created your space and selected a layout, your space should look something similar to the following:

Notice the red box in the upper left. Since we haven't yet created a Navigation page, there is no navigation pane to display here. To create the Navigation page, click on the red Navigation link with a plus (+) sign. This directs you to a new page where you can create the navigation. For assistance in creating the Navigation page, see The Navigation Menu.

Project Version Spaces

If there are multiple versions of a project, there should be a main project space (non version specific) and a separate space for each version. For example, there is a dorian, dorian11, dorian12, and dorian13 space for the Dorian project. The overview or home page and navigation page should be housed in the main project space (i.e. dorian). Any documentation or guides should be version specific and housed in its respective project version space (i.e. Developer's Guide for Dorian 1.3 is housed in the dorian13 space).

Each space will need its own Navigation page. To keep the navigation consistent and to enable easy editing of the navigation, create you navigation menu on the Navigation page in the main project space. Then, use {include:SPACEKEY:Navigation} in all of the Navigation pages for each project version space. This will simply include the navigation from the main project space. Therefore, any changes that are made to the Navigation page in the main space will be reflected in the of the navigation project spaces.

Space Administration

To set space permissions, change the layout, or edit space details, select Edit->Administration->Space administration. The next page will have a menu on the left which lists the options for a space administation.
