CSM

CSM Components not Designed for Use with CaGrid

There are some components of the original CSM implementation that we do not recommend for use with caGrid. These are UPT (an administration tool) in general and the CSM API when used for instance-level security.

Disadvantages of UPT in a caGrid Environment

UPT has some shortcomings in a caGrid environment that the CSM service was designed to fix. These are

  • There is no way to use user group definitions defined by grid grouper. Only user groups that are defined locally by CSM can be used. This can lead to duplicate effort and inconsistent group definitions.
The CSM service allows gridGrouper-defined groups that are of interested to be identified. It then automatically creates a local copy of the user group definitions and keeps it current.
  • UPT is not GAARDS. UPT is a web service. To use it requires provisioning a server to run UPT. The user interface for UPT is different than GAARDS and requires users to learn yet another user interface.

Disadvantages of CSM-API in a CaGrid Environment.

Introduce provides the option of generating grid services that use the CSM-API for service-level security and method-level security. This use of the CSM-API works well and its use is encouraged when appropriate.
