Upgrade caGrid 1.3 Grid to caGrid 1.4

The purpose of this guide is to provide step-by-step instructions for upgrading the caGrid 1.3 Training Grid deployment to caGrid 1.4. It is assumed that you followed the caGrid 1.3 Training instructions to set up your Grid.

The instructions presented here are based on the steps used to upgrade the caGrid 1.3 Training Grid to caGrid 1.4.

This guide will focus on upgrading existing services and deploying new services.

Step 1: Prerequisites

Determine Grid Service Deployment Layout

This is the installation plan that was developed for the Training Grid. This information will allow us to install and configure our hosts and networking.

Host / VM Configuration

The caGrid Knowledge Center created a caGrid 1.4 Virtual Machine suitable for VMWare ESX that was used as the "host" for each service. The VM was configured with a Grid user account and required software as listed here: caGrid 1.4 Host Configuration.

One service was deployed per VM on the caGrid 1.4 Training Grid.

Configuration File Setup

Now that you have planned your installation, you can extract the files in caGrid-1.4-Configs-NCI.zip. This zip file contains all of the configuration files that are needed to install an instance of caGrid. It contains QA, Stage, and Production directories.

Provided Tools

setMetadata.pl.zip is a Perl script that can be used to populate the service metadata for caGrid services. Instructions are provided at the top of the script. This script was tested on Mac and Linux.

Step 2: Upgrade Services

Note
The distribution of Globus WS Core 4.0.3 used for caGrid 1.4 has been updated. These changes allow for the deployment of containers on port 443. The caGrid 1.4 Installer has been updated to install the updated version of this package.

When installing caGrid using the caGrid Installer, select the option to reinstall Globus on each host.

Order-Specific Service Upgrades

The following three services were upgraded and tested in the specified order first for the Training Grid.
